A Tribute to Global Women Empowerment

Over time, there has been a plethora of voices clamouring for change in equal rights particularly pertaining to the female gender.

Women have engaged in several forms of activism, created programs and groups to further educate and empower women and girls, dissected the disparities that currently affect female education, and created awareness on the importance of gender lens investing.

As a result of these actions, there have been several honorary and befitting occurrences in favour of women wielding or projected to wield positions of power usually occupied by men.

The announcement of Kamala Harris as the Vice President-elect of the United State of America connotes a win served on a platter of gold to not just women’s successful and continuous activism, but to women of colour.

Kamala Harris is set to become the first African- American and the first female vice president in the history of the United States of America. She makes history again as she becomes the highest-ranking elected female official.

Back home we celebrate Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a woman with many feathers in her cap, who is expected to become the next Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.

With this appointment, she will be the first Nigerian, the first African, and the first female to ever lead the World Trade Organisation.

I marvel at the strides being made by women globally. Again, the pan-continental advancement as women is made more delightful because women of colour are being recognized.

We must not rest on our laurels. The world needs female leaders now more than ever.
